Texas Lawmakers React to Second Called Special Session

AUSTIN (WBAP/KLIF) – Texas Governor Greg Abbott called a second special legislative session on Thursday that begins a day after the current session ends.

Texas House Democrats have broken quorum for weeks during the current special session in an effort to stall a Republican-led voting bill. That session ends Friday. Governor Abbott has slated the second session to begin at 12 p.m. on Saturday.

“We’re going to tackle our work and get it done,” Republican State Rep. Jeff Leach said after the Governor announced the dates of the second session.

Many Texans, including Republican lawmakers, are wondering if Democrats will return to the Capitol on Saturday or continue to break quorum. Many of them remain in Washington D.C. where they are pushing for Federal voting legislation.

“Our strategy must be kept secret,” said Democratic State Rep. Gina Hinojosa. “While I would love to share with all what we intend to do, unfortunately it would disadvantage our position. But I will say this, we will fight this suppression session and the Republican effort to deny Texans access to their freedom to vote. We will fight that with as much vigor as we have to this point.”

A total of 17 items, including Federal COVID relief money, election reform, and bail reform, are on the agenda for the second special session.
