DSHS Urges More Texans to get Vaccinated as they Report 150% Increase in Covid-Related Hospitalizations

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF)- State health officials urge more Texans to get vaccinated as data shows a sharp hospitalization increase.

DSHS Commissioner Dr. John Hellerstedt says there’s a 150% rise in Covid-related hospitalizations in the state and the delta variant is spreading rapidly.

He gave an urgent update and warning on Twitter.

“Texas is in a race against time. COVID19 hospitalizations are rising and new variants of the virus are spreading quickly in our communities. The absolute best protection for yourself and those close to you is getting fully vaccinated … yes that means both doses.”

Hellerstedt thanked the 12 million vaccinated Texans for doing their part but said there’s still millions that have not been vaccinated.

He warns about the “devastating consequences” for Texans if we cannot curb this Delta-fueled spike by fully vaccinating more people.

“Unlike previous surges, we now have safe and powerfully effective vaccines and plenty of them. We know how to vaccinate millions of Texans in a short period of time. We can see the danger coming on fast but this time we can stop it in its tracks,” said Hellerstedt.

Tarrant county is considered one of the hot spots, with an infection rate of close to 225,000 people.
