Texas Republicans Call on Sergeant at Arms to Send for Return of Democrats

AUSTIN (WBAP/KLIF) – Texas Republicans are calling for Democrats to return to the current special legislative session in Austin after dozens of them broke quorum over a Republican-led voting measure.

More than 50 Democratic lawmakers from Texas flew to Washington D.C. on Monday to lobby for Federal voting legislation. The move essentially stalled the voting bill in the House.

Texas Democrats, like State Rep. Rafael Anchia, said Tuesday in D.C. that breaking quorum was a way to help ensure that all Texans have equal access to the ballot.

“That’s what this is about,” Rep. Anchia insisted.

Republican leaders contend Democrats abandoned their responsibilities. On Tuesday, House Republicans approved a resolution that calls on the Sergeant at Arms to send for Democrats’ return, even if that means through an arrest warrant.

“Any member who wishes to leave the hall must have written permission of the Speaker,” Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan announced, in addition.

Phelan said the bills can’t be heard without a quorum. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton told WBAP on Tuesday that forcing Democrats to return from D.C. will be difficult because of jurisdiction.
