Democrats Fight Governor’s Veto on Pay in Texas Supreme Court

AUSTIN (WBAP/KLIF) – Texas House Democrats said Friday that they have officially filed a petition with the Texas Supreme Court to stop Governor Greg Abbott’s veto of a line in the budget, ultimately preventing them from being paid.

The Governor’s move came after Democrats killed a Republican led voting measure by walking off the House floor.

“By attempting to defund the Texas legislature, Greg Abbott is steamrolling the Texas Constitution and looking more and more like a dictator,” said Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa. “I commend our Texas House Democrats for taking our disgraced governor to court. Abbott is abusing his office in a blatant power grab that is not in the bounds of his jurisdiction. The reason we have a separation of powers is to protect the right of Texans to be represented by all branches of their government — and to prevent actions like this from power-hungry politicians like Abbott.”

The Republican-led voting bill limits access to voting and comes as Congressional Democrats are pushing Federal legislation that expands voting access. Republicans argue the measure is meant to uphold integrity of U.S. elections. Governor Abbott called lawmakers back to Austin for a special session where the voting bill will be revisited.
