PLANO (WBAP/KLIF) – Several North Texas cities are struggling to fill summer jobs, leading to reduced hours at pools and rec-centers.

Cities like Lewisville, Irving, and Plano are short on lifeguards. Health concerns and uncertainty brought on by the COVID pandemic are partially to blame, even for previous employees.

“They’ve gone out and found other jobs,” said Plano’s Recreation Services Manager Susie Hergenrader. “Some people are just not ready yet to come back into the workplace if they don’t have to. Many of our employees are high school and college age kids. If they have a choice not to work, that’s what they’re choosing.”

Plano is limiting two of its city pools to just five days a week. Jack Carter Pool, one of the city’s most popular pool is now closing early on Sundays. Other North Texas cities have reduced operation times, as well.

Hergenrader said hours could be extended if the city can hire more seasonal employees.
