DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – This weekend may be a good time to replace outdated water systems and inefficient appliances. That’s because from Saturday through Monday at midnight, certain energy-efficient products displaying the energy star logo can be purchased tax free.
It’s part of Texas’ water efficient sales tax holiday. By taking advantage of the tax savings, Texans can update outdated water systems and inefficient appliances, lower utility bills and save money. That includes air conditioners priced at $6,000 or less, refrigerators priced at $2,000 or less, ceiling fans, fluorescent light bulbs, dishwashers, dehumidifiers and washing machines. “Not only do you get a tax free savings, it saves money on your energy bill too if they’ve got the energy star label on them. Those are the items, by the way, that are tax free,” said Kevin Lyons with the Texas Comptroller’s Office. Lyons said shoppers who want to save the tax this weekend should look for products displaying a Watersense label or logo.
The sales tax holiday also applies to lawn and garden products that help conserve water outdoors. That includes items like soaker or drip irrigation hoses, mulch, plants, trees, and grass. This weekend’s sales tax holiday was created by the Texas Legislature and is estimated to save shoppers about $13.4 million in state and local sales tax.
