FORT WORTH (WBAP/KLIF)- Governor Greg Abbott is in Fort Worth discussing a new offense that would crack down on illegal drugs smuggled by Mexican Drug Cartels across the Texas border. Abbott said President Joe Biden’s immigration policies are to blame for the influx of drugs, particularly Fentanyl, coming into Texas.
Just in Tarrant County, Fentanyl seizures are up 100% in the first four months of the year and 60 suspected Fentanyl overdoses were reported in the county this year. Abbott said no Fentanyl seizures were recorded from 2017-2019.
“Fentanyl is 100x more potent than Morphine, it is 50x more potent than Heroine. Just 2 little milligrams of Fentanyl is a lethal dose,” said Governor Abbott “It is invading the metroplex and has killed people in suburbs in this region and is spreading very rapidly,” he said.
The new offense for the manufacture or distribution of Fentanyl, would begin as a third degree felony, making it on of the toughest drug laws in the State of Texas.
Abbott said the Legislature also have appropriated more than a billion dollars for border security efforts. Part of those resources will be used to support and expand the Texas Department of Public Safety’s efforts to stop the illegal drug smuggling into Texas.
But it doesn’t stop there, Abbott said it’s essential for parents, schools, and other entities in the community to get involved to prevent Fentanyl deaths.
