Federal Government to Close Dallas Site Holding Migrant Teens

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – The temporary shelter housing migrant children at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas is expected to close in early June.

According to HHS, the lease for space at the federally run Dallas Emergency Intake Site expires June 2. The agency does not anticipate extending its contract.

“ORR is working to unify the teens at the Dallas EIS with their sponsors as quickly and safely as possible,” HHS told WBAP/KLIF News on Tuesday. “The number of unifications are increasing daily now that the case managers have had time to contact sponsors, and the verification process is underway.”

If there are teens who have not been unified with a sponsor when it is time to close, the federal government plans to relocate them to another appropriate facility in ORR’s network.

HHS anticipates that a majority of teens will be unified with their sponsors before the end of May.
