DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – Dallas Love Field Airport is moving forward with a runway renovation that was delayed due to the financial impacts of the coronavirus pandemic.
“This is a project we’ve known is coming up for a long time,” said airport spokesperson, Chris Perry. “It got pushed back a little back during the downturn of COVID because of not knowing what the financials looked like, but we’ve been able to move forward with it.”
Runway 13R-31L, nearest to Denton Drive, is set to be closed for 10 months beginning April 27 to accommodate its reconstruction.
The runway, which is the primary one for commercial operations, has reached the end of its useful life, according to Perry.
“It will not be extended during the reconstruction,” Perry said. “Increased traffic since the expiration of the Wright Amendment and heavier aircraft have led to deterioration of the runway’s surface.”
During the closure, which is scheduled to end in February 2022, all airport traffic will operate on Runway 13L-31R, nearest to Lemmon Avenue.
The impact to air travel is expected be minimal, but customers may experience intermittent delays when traveling to DAL. Area neighbors to the east of the airport could see a slight increase in noise exposure as all activity moves to that side of the airport.
