Federal Government Utilizing Athletic Complex at Fair Park as Border Crossings Surge

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – A second facility in Dallas is being used as a temporary site to hold migrant children who test positive for COVID-19.

A temporary shelter, operated by the Federal government, was opened at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center last month. That facility can hold more than 2,000 migrant teenagers, according to U.S. Health and Human Services. An official with the Dallas Independent School District confirmed on Monday that the P.C. Cobb Athletic Complex at Fair Park is being used by the Federal government as part of its operation to hold migrant children.

“PC Cobb is the off-site medical isolation space for children testing positive for COVID-19 at the Dallas Emergency Intake Site,” read a statement from HHS. “If a child tests positive after arrival, he or she is removed from the remaining population and placed at the facility offsite for the welfare of the child, staff, and others.”

Government officials and volunteers are working to place migrants held at facilities across Texas, and other parts of the country, with relatives or foster families.

According to DISD, Federal authorities have occupied the Cobb complex since March. DISD could not confirm how many migrants are being held at the complex. The district is not involved in the operation, aside from the use of its building.

The facility was being tightly guarded by security personnel on Monday. It was closed to the public.
