DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – Republican Congressman Louie Gohmert described the southern border as “overwhelmed” while joining WBAP’s Chris Krok Show on Tuesday night.

The Congressman shared stories of a recent trip to the McAllen area where he visited rural areas along the Rio Grande River late at night to witness the current surge of illegal crossings first hand.

“There were signs with the word asylum in Spanish with arrows pointing to the right direction to get to the border patrol more quickly,” said Gohmert. “Even with all the arrows we saw many people go the wrong way for miles before they would ever see a Border Patrol member.”

Gohmert said that the surge creates a distraction that allows smugglers and human traffickers to seize the moment.

“When they get a big surge of people coming across in the middle of the night, they know that that’s when the drug cartels are being drugs or high valued customers in illegally,” Gohmert said.

The Congressman said he came across a make shift stand with a red button that can be used to call for help.

Away from the border itself, Gohmert said conditions at migrant holding facilities in Texas are poor. He called for investigations into any and all allegations of abuse or sexual assault inside those facilities.

Gohmert, like other GOP leaders, blame what they refer to as “relaxed immigration policies” of the Biden administration on the current surge of migrant children crossing the southern border.
