Senator Cruz says Conditions at Dallas Shelter for Migrant Teens are Better than at other Facilities

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – U.S. Senator Ted Cruz toured the temporary shelter holding migrant children in Dallas on Monday. The trip came just days after the Senator led a delegation of nearly 20 Republican lawmakers to the border.

Senator Cruz said the Federally run site at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Downtown Dallas is currently housing about 2,200 migrant boys, ages 13 to 17. According to Senator Cruz, the conditions at the Dallas facility are better than what he saw at the facility in Donna, Texas.

“That being said, when you gaze across a room; a massive room with 2,200 teenage boys, it takes your breath away,” Cruz said. “Instead of on the floor, these children are now sleeping in cots. Instead of being immediately next to other children, they are six-feet apart,” Senator Cruz said.

The Senator said that around 10% of the Dallas shelter’s population has tested positive for COVID-19. According to the Senator, the violence among the teenagers has been minimal, but many of them witnessed violence on their journey to the United States.

Senator Cruz blamed the current surge of migrant children crossing the border on Biden administration policies, but said the solution is simple.

“End catch and release, and reinstate the remain in Mexico policy,” he insisted.

The Senator expects the Dallas site to continue to see more migrants arrive in weeks to come.
