WASHINGTON D.C. (WBAP/KLIF) – President Joe Biden spoke to reporters at the White House on Thursday during his first formal press conference since taking office.
The President opened the news conference by touting his administration’s efforts in the fight against COVID-19. After surpassing his initial goal of reaching 100 million COVID vaccinations in the first 100 days of his Presidency, the President announced another ambition.
“We will, by my 100th day in Office, have administered 200 million shots,” President Biden said.
The President confronted the recent surge of migrant children crossing the southern border. He placed blame on the Trump administration and said that strict Trump immigration policies caused a backlog in the immigration system.
“The policies that were in place did not stop people from coming,” said President Biden. “I make no apologies for removing policies that did not exist before Trump was President.”
The President defended his administration’s decision not to turn away unaccompanied minors, but called overcrowded facilities holding migrant children “unacceptable.” He promised to provide better conditions and make more facilities available. He committed to allowing media members access to the facilities.
President Biden also touched on the economic recovery from impacts of the COVID pandemic.
“Since we passed the American Rescue plan, we’re starting to see some new signs of hope in our economy,” President Biden said. “Since it was passed, a majority of economic forecasters have significantly increased their projections on the economic growth that is going to place this year. They’re now predicting it will exceed 6% growth in GDP.”
The President denied claims that he has rejected bi-partisanship and told reporters he expects to run for re-election in 2024.
