DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF)-Reliant Energy is helping a North Texas domestic violence shelter to reopen after it faced severe damage from the winter storm last month.
Reliant donated $100,000 to The Family Place which will go toward repairing the nonprofit’s largest emergency shelter. In February, The Family Place had to evacuate more than 120 women and children due to extensive water damage. The repairs include rebuilding transitional housing apartments and emergency shelter bedrooms, replacing ceilings, sheetrock and flooring, and providing new furnishings and mattresses.
The Family Place empowers victims of domestic violence by providing safe housing, counseling and life skills that create independence while building community engagement and advocating for social change to stop violence within families. The Family Place is the largest family violence service provider in Texas.
The donation is part of the initial $4 million commitment from Reliant and parent company NRG Energy, Inc. to address food and water shortages, temporary or damaged housing and the overall winter storm recovery effort across Texas.
