DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – The Emergency Intake Site at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas is expected to begin housing up to 3,000 migrant teenagers on or around Wednesday, March 17, according to Health and Human Services.
“The Emergency Intake Site will provide ORR with needed capacity to accept additional children into its care where they can be safely processed, cared for and either released to a sponsor or transferred to an appropriate ORR shelter for longer-term care,” read a statement from HHS. “The Emergency Intake Site is intended for use as a temporary measure.”
The unaccompanied boys ages 15-17 are being sent to North Texas from the Rio Grande Valley amid an influx of illegal border crossings.
According to HHS, a COVID-19 health screening protocol for all children will be implemented to follow CDC guidelines for preventing and controlling communicable diseases. Services will be provided by a combination of the American Red Cross, contractors, and federal staff – including teams from the HHS Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response and the US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps.
The Federal government is fully responsible for supporting and funding the site.
