Local Leaders Express Urgency in Correcting Failures that Contributed to Texas Power Outages

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – Dallas County leaders are calling on state lawmakers to take action this legislative session regarding widespread power outages during last month’s winter storm that left millions of Texans in the cold and the dark.

A resolution approved by the Dallas County Commissioners Court on Tuesday requests that lawmakers modernize and winterize infrastructure that would enhance the ability to function during extreme weather.

“Be it resolved and ordered that the Dallas County Commissioners Court does hereby strongly request that state leadership take the necessary steps to require the implementation of modernization and weatherization minimum standards to ensure the system remains capable of withstanding extreme weather events at least 10% worse than our worst known cold and hot outages,” the resolution stated.

The resolution also requested that the state legislature block high bills to consumers after winter storm power failures.

“We request state leadership to provide adequate and substantial relief to Texans suffering from high energy bills and losses due to the state’s failure to manage the state’s power supply and make the necessary changes to the state scheme to facilitate lowest price opportunity for individuals, families and small business,” the resolution stated.”

Counties and municipalities across the state are urging lawmakers to expose and correct the failures of the energy industry during the storm. Governor Greg Abbott has assured Texans that the legislative will not end until best practices are determined and funding is put in place to ensure that widespread forced outages that occurred last month never happen again.
