AUSTIN (WBAP/KLIF) – U.S. Senators from Texas, John Cornyn and Ted Cruz, wrote President Biden on Friday, in support of Governor Abbott’s request for a major disaster declaration following this week’s winter storm that left millions of Texans in the dark and the cold.
“Emergency resource distribution has been delayed by treacherous road, rail, and air travel conditions, leaving many Texans stranded in their own homes without heat, food, or water,” they wrote. “Thousands of Texans have had their homes and apartments flooded as frozen pipes begin to thaw. As a result of these breaks, Texans will continue to see water quality issues while repairs to infrastructure are made.
The Senators said that Federal action is necessary to protect the lives of Texans now and in the weeks to come.
The Governor is asking that all categories of Public Assistance, all programs of Individual Assistance, and the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program be authorized for all 254 Texas counties amid severe winter storms and associated outages across the State of Texas.
The President said on Friday he intends to sign off on the request. According to the White House, President Biden intends to visit Texas in the aftermath of the storm but details on timing are still being worked out.
