DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – The new Dallas Police Chief is addressing the ongoing debate over low-level possession of marijuana.
Chief Eddie Garcia proposed that the department deal with low-level marijuana possession by officer discretion.
“Our concentration in the department is going to be on violent crime,” Chief Garcia insisted.
The Chief addressed the topic the with city’s Public Safety Committee on Monday as part of an ongoing discussion about potentially voting on a resolution to ban the testing of low levels of pot. He said that having small amounts of marijuana for personal use isn’t worth an officer’s time, but could be if it involves dealing, or widespread distribution of drugs.
“The small amounts don’t excite me,” he said. “Arresting individuals that are victimizing our city, that excites me. Getting drug dealers excites me.”
The Chief and the committee will continue discussions on how to move forward on the topics after he spends more time with the department.
