GALVESTON (AP) – The mother of “Little Jacob”, whose body was found on a Galveston beach, has been sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole for the 4-year-old’s death.
According to court records, a judge sentenced Rebecca Suzanne Rivera Thursday following her conviction this week on a charge of injury to a child by omission.
Jayden Alexander Lopez’ body was found in October of 2017 and the community rallied together to identify him and bring his killer to justice.
Authorities said they were able to identify him from tips and DNA testing.
KHOU TV reports Rivera and her girlfriend, Dania Amezquita Gomez, took Jayden’s body to Galveston after he died in Houston. They initially dumped his body in the water near the beach where his remains were found a day later.
Court records show Rivera, who pleaded not guilty, is planning to appeal the verdict and sentence.
