GARLAND (WBAP/KLIF) – The COVID-19 vaccination site in Garland was up and running on Thursday.
White tents were set up in the parking lot of Homer B Johnson stadium at the drive thru vaccine mega-center and Police were directing traffic.
“We wanted to do it as a drive-up because we thought it was safer and much more efficient,” said Garland Mayor Scott LeMay.
The Mayor said the city currently has 1,000 available doses of vaccine. Volunteers and first responders from Garland, Sachse, and Rowlett are tasked with assisting until vaccine is administered.
“What we’re hoping for is that now that we are a hub that will put us better in the distribution system to receive more vaccines, more often, the Mayor said.
According to the Mayor, the issue for now is more demand and supply as Garland awaits future shipments of vaccine. He said that as of Thursday nearly 20,000 people had registered for a vaccine in Garland. Several hundred people were turned away from the site Thursday because they didn’t have an appointment. The city stressed that only those who registered and have a confirmed appointment for will be allowed.
When current vaccine runs out the site will be on hold until ore vaccine is arrived.
