Texas Capitol Grounds Closed During U.S. Capitol Insurrection

Texas Capitol, Austin

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – As an angry mob stormed the nation’s Capitol Wednesday the Texas Department of Public Safety closed the state Capitol in Austin.

A spokesperson for Freeman Martin, deputy director of homeland security operations at the Capitol, told the Texas Tribune that the building and its grounds were closing to the public “out of an abundance of caution” and that “DPS will continue to adjust our operations as needed to maintain public order and address potential threats.”

A peaceful crowd estimated at 700 – 800 gathered in front of the Texas Capitol earlier for what was being billed as a rally to protest what participants consider to be corruption in Washington.

KXAN reports there were a few heated discussions between opposing factions but they ended without becoming violent or leading to arrests.
