Irving Firefighter’s Injury Prompts Authorities to Speak Out against Drunk Driving, Highway Crashes

Firefighter Aaron Donohue: Irving PD

IRVING (WBAP/KLIF) – Authorities in Irving said this week that two common trends contributed to the brain injury of an Irving firefighter during a wrong way crash on Highway 183 over the weekend.

According to Irving fire Chief Victor Conley, it wasn’t the first time an Irving firefighter was hit while working an accident on a major highway.

“This is our fourth firefighter that’s been hit on a major thoroughfare in a five year period,” Chief Conley said.

He said the department is working on ways to enhance safety for its firefighters.

Meanwhile, Robert Reeves with Irving the Police Department, warned against drunk driving after it was learned the driver who hit Donohue was drunk.

“If you know someone who’s had to much, step in to intervene,” he insisted.

According to Reeves, more than 900 people have been arrested in Irving so far this year for drunk driving. 75% of Irving’s 14 fatal crashes this year have involved drunk driving.

The Irving Police Department was working a major accident at approximately 3:45 a.m. Sunday involving five vehicles WB 3100 block W.S.H. 183. The freeway had been shut down due to the accident when a 2016 Dodge
Challenger was traveling the wrong way, eastbound in the westbound lanes of SH 183, drove into the accident scene striking Firefighter Aaron Donohue.

Donohue is expected to survive but Chief Conley said Monday he suffered a traumatic brain injury.

The driver of the vehicle, Yajaira Estrada Calderon, is a 23-year old female out of Arlington and has been arrested for Intoxication Assault.
