DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson described a continued rise in violent crime “unacceptable” in a statement released on Monday.
According to the Dallas Police Department, at least seven people were murdered over the weekend, including a father and his daughter.
The department said that Officers responded to a shooting call in the 2800 block of Kirven Drive on Sunday night. Witnesses told Police that three Black males approached the victim, 49-year-old Raul Carrillo Resendiz. They described a young Black male with short dreadlocks as the shooter. According to DPD, the suspects then fled the location in a small four-door sedan, possibly a Honda Civic, with black rims.
The victim’s daughter, 30-year-old Diana Resendiz, pursued the suspects in her vehicle. She was later found in her vehicle in the 9100 block of Jennie Lee Lane with a gunshot wound. Witnesses at that scene reported seeing a similar vehicle flee the location after she was shot. Dallas Fire and Rescue transported Raul Carrillo Resendiz to an area hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. Diana Resendiz was pronounced dead at the scene.
Dallas Police collected surveillance video of the suspect vehicle.
Mayor Johnson said that public safety must be a top priority.
“Violent crime continues to rise at an unacceptable rate in Dallas, and we are outpacing the increases in many other big cities,” Mayor Johnson said. “While I am pushing for the rapid implementation of the Mayor’s Task Force on Safe Communities recommendations, our residents deserve answers right now from our law enforcement officials about what they are doing to combat the violence.”
The continued rise in violent crime comes as Dallas begins its search for a new Police Chief. The current Chief, Renee Hall, will leave the department at the end of this year, after resigning.
