DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF)- On November 11, the nation will pause to remember Veterans Day and honor the brave service men and women who put everything on the line for our country. For many of our wounded veterans the battle never ends, and in war, there are no unwounded soldiers.
Army Veteran Centra “Ce-Ce” Mazyck, shares her inspiring story.
Mazyck said she first joined the military to help pay for college, but her commitment to the Army became more than that.
Mazyck was a jump master in the 82nd Airborne Division and during a routine jump, the unthinkable happened.
“The wind caused my parachute to collide with a fellow jumper and I didn’t have time for a proper landing and when I hit the ground, I was paralyzed from impact,” said Mazyck.
Mazyck said she was told she could never walk again.
“When I heard that news, all I could think about my one year old son and how this would impact him,” said Mazyck. “He was my reason to fight and never give up,” she said.
Mazyck persevered, she rebuilt her life when her decade-long career in the military came to an abrupt end.
Mazyck took advantage of the benefits from the DAV (Disabled American Veterans) and was able to go to rehab.
Through that, not only did she teach herself to walk, she went on to compete in the Paralympics and went back to college- all as a single mom.
Mazyck said this organization changed her life and she’s grateful. “It’s a celebration because we are here, this is our second chance at life and I believe all veterans, I know for myself, are going to ride it until the wheels fall off,” she said.
