
Dallas-Fort Worth (WBAP/KLIF) – Senator John Cornyn is being blasted by Democrats over news that he disagreed with President Trump on several issues but chose to keep his opposition private rather than speaking up.
The comments were made in a private interview with the Fort Worth Star Telegram’s editorial board. Cornyn reportedly told the panel that he quietly disagreed with Trump on budget deficits and tariffs & trade; He added that he applauds Trump for or standing up to China but added, “Frankly, this idea that China is paying the price and we’re not paying the price here at home is just not true.”
He also disagreed with the use of national security funds for a border wall.
Cornyn’s senatorial opponent, Democrat MJ Hegar took to Twitter to label Cornyn a “coward” for not speaking up.
Cornyn reportedly told the publication’s editorial panel that rather than speak out publicly, he negotiated behind the scenes with Trump staffers.
In describing his relationship with Trump, Cornyn said, “Maybe like a lot of women who get married and think they’re going to change their spouse, and that doesn’t usually work out very well.”
According to the latest University of Texas/Texas Tribute poll Cornyn, leads Hegar 50%-42% in his bid for a fourth term.
Hegar also met with members of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram Editorial Board.
The retired Air Force combat pilot, acknowledged that if she were to get elected senator, many Texans would expect her to go against the Democratic Party on some issues. She said, “I will not be a patsy for the hard left.”
She said that her primary battle against long time state Senator Royce West aw “difficult” because of her refusal to go along with left-of-center Democratic positions.
