It’s a case that sparked nationwide outrage amid a movement calling for the end to police brutality and systemic racism against African Americans and other minorities.
On Sunday, dozens of Jefferson’s family and friends gathered at her family’s home on East Allen Avenue to remember her life.
Jefferson was shot through a window of her home when police responded a call for a welfare check about an open front door. She had been playing video games with her nephew.
Fort Worth police released body camera footage that showed the officers did not announce themselves.
Responding to noises heard from outside, Jefferson grabbed her handgun and looked out of a window.
The body cam video showed former officer Aaron Dean shouting for her to put her hands up and firing through the window one second later.
He was fired and is charged with murder in her death. A trial date has not been set.
Those who either knew Jefferson or who want justice for her took to social media to show their support.
