Wolfe City Officer Claims Taser wasn’t Fully Effective Before Deadly Shooting

WOLFE CITY (WBAP/KLIF) – New details in last week’s deadly shooting involving a white Police Officer and a 31-year-old black man were made public on Wednesday.

Wolfe City Police Officer Shaun Lucas is charged with Murder in the Saturday night shooting death of Jonathan Price outside a Wolfe City gas station.

A newly released probable cause affidavit gives the Officer’s account of what happened. According the document, Lucas responded to the gas station on a report of a possible fight. The affidavit states that Price came “very close” to Officer Lucas, asking “you doing good” multiple times while extending his hand in a handshake gesture.

Lucas suspected Price was drunk, according to the affidavit, and tried to detain him.

“Officer Lucas produced a taser and informed Price to comply or the taser would be applied,” the document says. “Price failed to comply and began to walk away. Officer Lucas deployed the taser that was not fully effective. While being tased, Price continued to walk toward Officer Lucas. Price appeared to reach out and grab the end of Officer Lucas’ taser. Officer Lucas discharged his firearm four times striking Price in the upper torso.”

Price’s mother called the decision to shoot excessive.

“He didn’t need to shoot,” Marcella Louis said.

The Texas Rangers said that their investigation revealed Price resisted, but in a non-threatening posture. The incident was recorded on body camera but that footage has not been released.
