Dallas County Commissioners Press Election Officials on Mail-in Ballots

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – The Dallas County Elections Department is being pressed about its handling of mail-in ballots ahead of next month’s election.

More Americans are expected to vote by mail in this election compared to previous ones, because of concerns surrounding the coronavirus pandemic.

Dallas County Commissioner J.J. Koch said during Tuesday’s Commissioners Court meeting that he’s worried about how the election office is dealing with a spike in requests for mail in ballots.

“I know the plan is there, but I don’t know if the execution is going to be there,” insisted Koch.

The election department reports that 66,000 requested mail in ballots haven’t been sent out yet. More than 120,000 ballots have been requested and just over 50,000 have been sent out. But, election officials told the court that many of the application requests were duplicates.

“It’s what comes into the mail, not what’s processed,” said Dallas County Election Administrator Toni Pippins-Poole. “We had over 15,000 of those applications as duplicates.”

Poole encouraged anyone who feels inclined to drop off mail in ballots in person at the election office.
