31-year-old Jonathan Price was breaking up a domestic violence situation between a man and woman at an Exxon gas station when the shooting occurred Saturday.
Our media partner, WFAA TV, reports witnesses said the man assaulted Price, when officers arrived they allegedly tazed him before firing the fatal shots.
Price’s family told WFAA TV they’re heartbroken and add this didn’t have to happen.
“He was diffusing the situation and now, my cousin, I won’t get to see my cousin tomorrow,” he said.
Price was a Wolfe City employee and was known as a “pillar of the community.”
When news of Price’s death spread, those who knew him took to social media to mourn.
Lost one of our own in a terrible situation. Jonathan Price was an awesome young man during his time with Cowboy Football. Was only with us for a short time in 2008 but was always a Cowboy. Prayers for comfort and peace for Jonathan’s family. #CowboyBrother

A GoFundMe campaign to help the family pay for funeral expenses has already raised more than $52,000.
Wolfe City officials said the officer who shot Price has been placed on administrative leave. The Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting.
Wolfe City is about 70 miles northeast of Dallas.
