Texas Fugitive Wanted In Connection With Georgia Deputy Shooting Captured

DALTON, Ga. (WBAP/KLIF News) – After 72 hours on the run, a Texas fugitive accused of shooting a Georgia deputy during a traffic stop is behind bars.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said authorities 29-year-old Dalton Potter Wednesday after a violent encounter with a Whitfield County Deputy.

Whitefield County Sheriff Scott Chitwood said a resident had been shot after encountering Dalton near his home in Gordon just northwest of the town of Resaca, according to the Associated Press.

The victim is hospitalized in stable condition.

Chitwood said Potter was found hiding in a swampy area near the site of the initial shooting.

Investigators said Potter shot Whitfield County Sheriff’s Deputy Darrell Hackney early Monday morning.

Hackney had been wearing a ballistic vest and was not seriously injured.

Chitwood said Potter had been hauling explosives in a stolen trailer at the time.
