Dallas County Commissioners Deny Proposed Pay Raise for Elected Officials

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – The Dallas County Commissioners Court voted unanimously on Tuesday to deny a proposed pay raise for elected officials.

The proposed 2% pay bump would have included the Commissioners themselves, but the court deemed it inappropriate to pass the measure amid the continued financial impacts of COVID-19.

“Because of the great pain that I have seen by so many families and kids around Dallas County who have been furloughed or are on the verge of eviction,” Commissioner Theresa Daniel said.

County Judge Clay Jenkins said he never has, and never will, vote to boost pay for elected officials.

“The optics of the 2% when so many people are hurting is just too much for a lot of folks,” said Commissioner J.J. Koch. “And it’s certainly more than just optics.”

A group of protesters urged the Commissioners to deny the proposed increase ahead of Tuesday’s meeting.

The court will take up a proposed pay increase for county employees when its considers next year’s budget.
