FRISCO (WBAP/KLIF) – Major League Soccer’s FC Dallas is condemning comments directed at defender Reggie Cannon after he criticized fans for booing when his team knelt during the national anthem this week. Cannon’s remarks caught national attention.
“We’ve discussed with every other team and the league what we’re going to do,” Cannon said in a post game press conference. “How disgraceful is that?”
According to FC Dallas executives Clark and Dan Hunt, Cannon received racist comments and death threats after his remarks.
“There is no place in our sport, or in our country for that matter, for the kind of horrific vitriol Reggie has had to endure today,” the brothers said in a joint statement. “Hateful or violent threats are never warranted – especially when they are directed toward a member of our FC Dallas family.”
The Hunt’s called the threats “repulsive” and “unacceptable.”
“We will continue to work together – with our players, our coaches and our fans – against racism and in the cause of equality for all,” they promised.
Major League Soccer said it won’t tolerate any abuse or threats aimed at players who choose to protest social injustice.
