Memorial for Slain Fort Hood Soldier Planned in Houston

HOUSTON (WBAP/KLIF News) – A memorial has been planned in Houston to honor the life of slain Fort Hood solider Spc. Vanessa Guillen.

In a statement, Guillen family attorney Natalie Khawam said the ceremony will be held at Vanessa’s old high school, Cesar E. Chavez High School, where she played soccer, Friday at 8 p.m.

Khawam said the Catholic service will be open to the public and streamed online.

Guillen vanished from Fort Hood April 22nd and her body was found near the Leon River, about 20 miles near the base in late June.

Authorities said she was killed on base by fellow, Spc. Aaron Robinson, who allegedly asked by his girlfriend, Cecily Aguilar, to help dispose of the body.

Robinson died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound as Killen officers moved in to arrest him.

Aguilar is charged with one count of tampering with evidence.

Guillen’s family said Vanessa had filed a harassment complaint against Robinson before she was killed.

Her murder sparked calls for the military to be held accountable and for changes to be made about how it handles harassment and sexual assault claims.

Secretary of the Army Ryan McCarthy visited Fort Hood last week and ordered and independent review of the command climate.
