FORT WORTH (WBAP/KLIF)- Fort Worth District 8 City Councilmember Kelly Allen Gray is urging people to sign up for a virtual seminar aimed at improving community relations with police officers.
In the free seminar, “Serve & Protect: I Am Not A Threat,” participants will hear from current and retired police officers and engage in a question-and-answer session to better understand their role when interacting with police officers.
The virtual seminar will be conducted 2-4 p.m. Aug. 2 via Webex.
Two informative sessions will be led by experts in their fields:
Session 1: Interacting with Police and Knowing Your Rights. Led by retired Texas Department of Public Safety Officer Charles Beckworth.
Session 2: Levels of Resistance. Led by Fort Worth Police Officer Brandon Morris.
Gray said understanding your rights and how to handle a negative police encounter is important now more than ever. “It was important before Atatiana Jefferson, with Ahmaud Arbery and it’s still important now after George Floyd,” said Gray. “Everyone has to be able to walk away from the encounter alive and our goal is to teach everyone, officers included, on how to better handle these situations,” she said.
The event will be moderated by Brian Ayers, Joseph J. Moseley II, Ryland Gray and Kendyll Locke.
“This is not an open forum for residents to express their anger. Anyone who is disrespectful during the event will be removed and organizers will be heavily monitoring the chat,” said Gray.
The seminar can have up to 10,000 participants.
