Weatherford, TX (WBAP/KLIF) -Parker County Commissioners have unanimously voted to keep the statue of Confederate soldiers on its courthouse lawn. The vote was 5-0.
Parker County Commissioners first left the decision up to the Daughters of the Confederacy, because they own the statue. President of the Texas Chapter for the Daughters of the Confederacy Dorothy Norred said she wanted to make it clear that she never wanted the statue to be removed.
“I will not move the monument unless the commissioners vote to remove the monument, at that time and only at that time will I go forward with the movement,” she said.
Whether or not to take down the confederate statue in Weatherford has been a controversial topic, sparking protests over the weekend.
“This monument has been there over 100 years, this is it’s home,” she said.
Norred said she’s had multiple calls pleading for it to be kept and others threatening they will tear it down themselves if they have to.
“I don’t want to see individuals hurt or anything happen to our statue. I have had messages that if I don’t get rid of the statue they will come after me…I’ve had messages that if I don’t get rid of the statue that they will tie a rope around it and drag it through the streets,” she said.
Norred said she feels it’s time to stand up for what she believes in and make a statement about how she feels.
“I don’t take threats lightly. I’m not afraid of them but I will stand up to them,” she said.
