FORT WORTH (WBAP/KLIF)- After a five hour meeting with public comment, the Fort Worth ISD Board decided to start the school year on September 8th and for it to be online only for the first four weeks.
Then, students may have the opportunity to continue the virtual learning or switch to in-person learning in October.
“It’s important to recognize that these are extremely difficult times for educators, we are looking at an ever-changing landscape of public health conditions but first, the boards position was that health and safety was the number one priority and that’s why we made the decision,” said Superintendent Dr. Kent Scribner.
Thursday’s special meeting comes after Attorney General Ken Paxton issued guidance that local health authorities cannot make the decision for when schools can open, and each school district must individually do so.
“We have communicated with faculty, staff and the external community and the feedback we’ve gotten from our teachers has been very positive…they have been experiencing a great deal of uncertainty and fear in most cases,” said Scribner.
The motion passed 8-1.
