DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – Dallas schools Superintendent Michael Hinojosa is casting doubt on DISD’s ability to reopen schools as scheduled on August 17 because of the recent resurgence in COVID-19 infections. During an interview on MSNBC Hinojosa said he also didn’t think high schools would be playing football games during the next school year. He later explained to the Dallas Morning News that he was just speculating. The final decision on whether to cancel Friday Night Lights would be made by the Texas University Interscholastic League, which doesn’t seem so inclined. The UIL has just approved plans for school teams to begin summer workouts under new safety guidelines.

As for when students and teachers might return to classrooms the superintendent told the Morning News, “August 17 is our start date — our projected start date, but I think that is pretty much in jeopardy.” He said he will recommend pushing the start of school back to after Labor Day, September 7. The proposal would have to be approved by the DISD board at a meeting to be scheduled by Hinojosa.
