HOUSTON (WBAP/KLIF) – Houston city officials announced Wednesday that they have canceled the Texas GOP’s in-person convention set for next week amid concerns surrounding the recent increase in COVID-19 cases in the city.

According to Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, the city’s lawyers exercised provisions in the contract that the Texas Republican Party signed to rent George Brown Convention Center.

“It is my role as Mayor of this city to protect the health, safety, and welfare of every single person,” Turner said.

Governor Greg Abbott had publicly deferred to state party leaders who last week voted to go forward with an in-person event.

The Texas GOP has maintained it implemented protocol to allow for a safe event.
