GALVESTON (WBAP/KLIF News) – Anyone thinking of hitting the beaches in Galveston for the Fourth of July weekend needs to make an alternate plan.
Galveston Mayor Jim Yarbrough decided to close all city beaches over the holiday to prevent overcrowding as COVID-19 cases continue to surge statewide.
The closure begins at Friday at 5 a.m. and lasts until 12 a.m. Monday.
The city will also ban parking on both sides of the historic Seawall Boulevard during that time.
Chairs, picnics, tents or any other type of tailgate equipment will not be allowed.
In a statement, Mayor Yarbrough said in part:
“Galveston has and will always be a welcoming destination, but the ongoing public health crisis demands our attention and response. We have to prioritize health and safety.”
Anyone who violates the order can face up to a Class C misdemeanor and an up to a $500 fine.
