U.S. Secretary of Labor Scalia Meets with Dallas Business Leaders, Highlights Economic Recovery

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF)- U.S. Secretary of Labor Eugene Scalia visits Dallas, where he joined the Dallas Regional Chamber of Commerce for a roundtable discussion with local business leaders on safely reopening the economy.

Later in the day, Secretary Scalia visited American Leather, where he met with both employees and company leadership about the nationwide economic recovery.

“Texas created 240,000 jobs just in the month of May, more than any other state in the country,” said Scalia.  “Our economy is on the rebound, and it’s evident in places like Dallas where America’s manufacturers are coming back online and bringing employees back to work,” he said.

Scalia said this economic rebound is soaring faster than predicted.

Scalia notes that the main takeaway from the roundtable focused on workplace safety. He said many employers are changing certain procedures and protocols to make sure they are practicing social distancing, mask wearing and enhanced cleaning. “I’ve never seen the business community as focused on workplace safety as it is right now and that’s a good thing,” said Scalia.

Secretary Scalia highlighted President Trump’s swift and comprehensive response to the coronavirus pandemic, as well as the Department’s Occupational Health and Safety Administration’s continued work providing relevant guidance to employers as they meet their duty to protect employees from coronavirus.

“The economy in the United States was so extraordinary strong before the pandemic struck; we had record low unemployment, rising wages and the President is focused like a laser in getting us back to that point,” he said.

The mission of the Department of Labor is to foster, promote and develop the welfare of the wage earners, job seekers and retirees of the United States; improve working conditions; advance opportunities for profitable employment; and assure work-related benefits and rights.
