DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – The oldest public monument in Dallas is being dismantled this week at the city’s Pioneer Park.
The Confederate monument went up in 1896. It features a 60 foot-tall column with a Confederate figure on top and four figures on the ground surrounding it. Those figures were removed and prepared for storage on Monday and Tuesday.
Construction crews have been on site for more than a week and have more work to do. The project is estimated to take a total of two months.
The City of Dallas was granted an emergency order earlier this month to allow the statue to come down out of concern it could be torn down like in other American cities. According to the city, the estimated cost of removal is close to $400,000.
