DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – The Dallas County Commissioners Court passed a measure with a 3 to 2 to vote on Friday to order all businesses in the county to require masks for any customers 10 years of age and older.
The vote was made during a special meeting of the Commissioners Court that was called to solely discuss the mask requirement. The debate comes after Governor Greg Abbott declines to issue a statewide mask mandate, but suggested local leaders had the power to issue requirements for businesses.
Commissioners John Wiley Price and J.J. Koch voted against the requirement, saying the decision should be left up to businesses.
“Tell me how many businesses you’ve watched go under because government decided to get all up in their business,” Koch said.
“I want him or her to make their own free market options,” Price emphasized.
Violators could be fined up to $500. According to the order, fines are to be assessed by Dallas County Health and Human Services, not law enforcement.
