Tarrant County Commission Approves ICE

(WBAP/KLIF) — A partnership between Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Tarrant county will continue.  The partnership known as “287-G” trains county jailers to determine the immigration status of prisoners.

Of the 307 inmates questioned last year, 70 were deported and 61 left the country voluntarily.  Supporters of the measure felt renewing the program keeps the county safer.  The Tarrant County Commission passed the measure 3-2, however opponents argued “287-G” promotes racial profiling.

It took four months of public comment before the commission voted to extend a controversial immigration program.  According to WFAA, once jailers believe a prisoner is in the country illegally, they are turned over to federal ICE officials who decide if deportation is necessary.
