University of Texas Athletes Push to Replace School Song

AUSTIN (WBAP/KLIF NEWS)- As protest against racial injustice continue across the country, multiple confederate monuments have been taken down and relocated while some buildings named after slave owners and confederate generals are being renamed.

Now the University of Texas fight song, The Eyes of Texas, is being targeted after some say the lyrics “the eyes of Texas are upon you” and “you cannot get away” is a reference to slaves attempting to escape.

This Dallas citizen thinks canceling traditions in unnecessary,

“It’s terrible what they’re trying to do they can do it in a different more constructive way,” she said.

While this citizen supports the motion,

“It’s all bad nobody in their right mind puts up statues of the group that tried to kill them,” he said.

UT athletes have also requested that Robert Lee Moore Hall, Painter Hall, Littlefield Hall, and the James Hogg Auditorium be renamed. All of which are named after slave owners.

Wide receiver Brennan Eagles tweeted the full list of request Texas student athletes have put together.
