WASHINGTON (WBAP/KLIF News) – The Supreme Court ruled Monday that workers can not be fired for being gay, lesbian or transgender.
In a 6-3 decision, the court ruled a key provision of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 known as Title VII that bars job discrimination because of sex, among other reasons, encompasses bias against gay and lesbian workers, according to the Associated Press.
Conservative Justice Neil Gorsuch wrote the opinion.
The ruling received resounding praise from the millions of LGBTQ workers nationwide because most states don’t have laws in place against workplace discrimination.
In a tweet, GLAAD, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, responded to the news in part:
“The Supreme Court’s historic decision affirms what shouldn’t have even been a debate: LBGTQ Americans should be able to work without fear of losing jobs because of who we are.”
