FEMA Denies Dallas County’s Appeal for Tornado Relief

(WBAP/KLIF) — Dallas County has been denied tornado relief from the federal government for a second time.  Texas governor Greg Abbott appealed FEMA’s March 31st decision to deny Dallas County a major disaster declaration. The designation would have provided a 75% federal reimbursement of the $190 million in damages caused by last year’s tornadoes.

Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson tweeted that he is stunned and extremely disappointed at FEMA’s decision, stating that the request for assistance became a bureaucratic game at the federal level.  FEMA indicated the level of damage sustained from the storms did not rise to the level of a major disaster declaration.

FEMA administrator Pete Gaynor informed Governor Abbott, Tuesday, about the agency’s decision to uphold their previous ruling. The agency determined the the severity of the damage did not rise to the level necessary to warrant a major disaster declaration.
