Another 2.1 Million Americans File Unemployment, Bringing Total to 40.8 Million Amid COVID-19 Pandemic

WASHINGTON  (WBAP/KLIF News) – Millions of Americans continue to lose their jobs as the COVID-19 pandemic continues.

The U.S. Department of Labor reports about 2.1 million people applied for unemployment benefits last week bringing the total to 40.8 million since businesses were forced to shut down or downsize back in March to curb the spread of the virus.

In Texas, about 2.2 million residents filed unemployment in the last ten weeks.

Those who file have the end of July to claim their enhanced unemployment benefits.

They’re entitled to $600 a week on top of the state’s benefits as part of the CARES act passed by Congress.

The American unemployment rate, which sits at 23.9%, is at its highest since The Great Depression.
