Hospital Bed, Ventilator Capacity Remains Steady as COVID-19 Cases Rise

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – More than 2,500 cases of COVID-19 have been reported in the DFW metroplex and at least 50 people have died, but beds and ventilators are still readily available at many local hospitals.

Dallas County Health and Human Services reported 63 additional positive cases on Wednesday, bringing the total case count in Dallas County to 1,324. The 20th death from COVID-19 was reported of man in his 60’s who was a resident of the city of Rowlett.  He had been critically ill in an area hospital and had underlying high-risk health conditions.

“The Safer at Home Order that you have embraced and followed is working to flatten the curve,”  said Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins. “Nothing will distract my team from the mission. We need your help.”

Collin County Health Care Services announced Tuesday that an 80-year-old McKinney is the fifth death in Collin County of a person who previously tested positive for COVID-19. The woman’s official cause of death was attributed to a serious underlying medical condition, and COVID-19 was not included as the cause. She was confirmed to have the virus on April 1, and died this morning at her home. To respect and honor her family, no further personal information will be released.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to her family and friends,” said Collin County Judge Chris Hill. “It is always painful to lose a loved one.”

As of Tuesday night, CCHCS reported 343 confirmed cases of COVID-19 among Collin County residents, with 129 of those individuals reported to have recovered.

More than 500 cases are reported in Tarrant County with 19 deaths. Denton county reports over 350 cases.

Bed and ventilator capacity continues to be tracked as the coronavirus pandemic continues. Twenty-four hospitals on Tuesday reported ventilator and bed capacity numbers to Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson’s office.

Below are the aggregate totals for Tuesday, as reported by the 24 hospitals:

  • Total beds: 5,349
