DENTON (WBAP/KLIF News) – United Way Denton is helping residents who are feeling the economic sting of the coronavirus outbreak in North Texas.
The nonprofit’s Gary Henderson said they’ve created the COVID-19 relief fund to keep residents affected by job closures and school/daycare closures who are on the brink of financial ruin.
“It’s a series of underlying circumstances that make it impractical for them to pay all of their bills this month and the one bill that we as a community want to make sure that our residents are able to pay is that bill that allows them to stay housed,” he said.
To kickstart the fund, Denton Mayor Chris Watts appropriated $50,000. Henderson said more funds will be needed as the outbreak continues and added that a little donation goes a long way.
“It could be a hundred, two hundred, three hundred dollars for this month while this individual is unable to go to work and has had a disruption in their income… that small donation is actually keeping them housed before the public funding resources come into play like unemployment benefits,” said Henderson.
United Way Denton said the funds received will be distributed through grants to Denton County nonprofits or directly to the resident in need.
