ARLINGTON (WBAP/KLIF News) – Six Flags Over Texas and Six Flags Fiesta Texas are the latest major entertainment venues to temporarily suspend operations as the coronavirus outbreak continues to grow in North Texas.
The parks will be closed until the end of March and then officials will re-evaluate the situation.
In a statement, the parks said there have been no reported cases of COVID-19 at either property, the moves was done out of an abundance of caution.
“The safety of our guests and team members is our highest priority. We will continue to monitor these evolving conditions, and will follow current guidance from federal, state and local officials.”
These types of announcements have become common place as the number of confirmed and presumptive positive cases of COVID-19 continue to rise in North Texas.
There are at least 22 cases in Texas and at least 13 cases across the Metroplex.
The newly-completed Globe Life Field announced it was suspending its first concert featuring Chris Stapleton and Willie Nelson that was scheduled this weekend to prevent community spread.
Also this week, the NBA announced it was suspending league games until further notice with Dallas Mavericks team owner Mark Cuban announcing that he will work out a plan to make sure him employees are paid during the suspension.
“They get paid by the hour and that’s their sole source of income. We may go ask them to do some volunteer work in exchange,” he said.
Meanwhile, Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins issued a public health emergency declaration after a fifth case of presumed coronavirus was identified, bringing the total to eight.
Jenkins said one of the patients contracted the virus due to community spread.
The declaration bans public gatherings of 500 or more people in an effort to curb a coronavirus outbreak.
